There’s no competition this week. The winner was going to be crowned the moment Black Thought aka Tariq Trotter stepped up to the mic in Funk Flex‘s studio and freestyled for ten minutes of absolute hip hop greatness. What’s most amazing is that even though it’s been thirty years since Black Thought co-founded the Roots in Philadelphia with Questlove, it’s obvious Black Thought is still fine tuning his skills.
While the Roots have found new cultural significance as the house band for Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” it is unknown just how much today’s hip hop community appreciate the contributions, the greatness, the legendary status achieved by both the group and by Black Thought individually.
That is, until Black Thought decided to up-end the entire concept of freestylin’ with Funk Flex with this performance on Hot 97 New York.
