The 1st Round Terminator is Back!
UFC is combating the STRIKEFORCE 8-MAN HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT by beefing up its own heavyweight division again.
With UNDISPUTED UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION CAIN VELASQUEZ OUT OF ACTION UNTIL AT LEAST OCTOBER WITH A TORN ROTATOR CUFF, it appeared as though the UFC Heavyweight Division was in serious trouble.
Although many are speculating BROCK LESNAR and Junior Dos Santos will be named as the next coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (and then fight in a subsequent contest), no confirmation (or even denial) from UFC PRESIDENT DANA WHITE as of yet.
Now, time to fill in the ranks.
That means the return of Shane Carwin.
The 36 year old native of Colorado has agreed to make his return at UFC 131, which is expected to take place June 11th in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"No opponent has been mentioned,” Carwin wrote in a blog this afternoon, although Carwin did admit he was offered a chance at fighting TUF Season 10 Winner Roy Nelson at UFC 130 on May 28th.
Carwin, who crushed 12 straight opponents, each in the 1st round, before running up against then-UFC Champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 (CLICK HERE FOR OUR EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE OF BROCK LESNAR VS SHANE CARWIN AT UFC 116), stated “I am training hard and working on fixing the issues I ran into during the Lesnar fight."
After the Lesnar fight, the bad news continued for Carwin, as his name was reportedly included in a list of twenty two professional athletes who had received shipments in 2006 from J. Michael Bennett, an Alabama pharmacist convicted of participating in a nationwide anabolic steroid ring. Carwin has never tested positive for steroids or any banned substance in his entire MMA career.
Carwin was then scheduled to fight Roy Nelson at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day, but withdrew from that bout due to intense back pain. Carwin then underwent what has been labeled successful surgery to relieve pressure from his C5, 6 and 7 vertebrae.
