Brazil, the odds-on favorite to win this year’s World Cup, was eliminated from Qatar 2022 after a thrilling quarterfinal match against Croatia ending on penalties 1-1 (4-2).
Neymar appeared to have won it for Brazil after tying Pele‘s international scoring record with a breathtaking solo goal in extra-time, but Bruno Petkovic broke Brazilian hearts with a last-second equalizer to force the game to penalties.
Dominik Livakovic of Croatia, who had saved Rodrygo‘s first attempt before defender Marquinhos attempted to counter, hit the post and sent Croatia through to the semifinals, becoming the shootout’s hero.
Additionally, Livakovic turned aside three penalties when his team defeated Japan in the previous round.
