After a twelve-week run on top, Taylor Swift‘s new album “The Tortured Poets Department” has been knocked off from its position as No.1 on the charts. The culprit? Eminem, of course, as “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace)”, the latest LP by the Detroit rapper who completely changed the game, opened at the top of the Billboard 200 chart with what amounts to 281,000 sales in the US. We should also note the sales should reflect 220 million streams and 114,000 traditional sales, all as in digital downloads, according to data made available by tracking service Luminate.
This is historic, as it’s Eminem’s 11th album to reach No. 1, which ties him with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Kanye West. The only artists ahead of them are Drake (who has 13), Jay-Z and Taylor Swift (who have 14 each), and the Beatles (who have 19).
Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” falls to No. 4 after a fantastic twelve-week run on top, which began with blockbuster vinyl and streaming numbers. She continued to defeat all comers with a strategy of releasing special “versions” of her album, using bonus tracks and variant packaging to entice her fans to buy it again and again.
