Saturday, May 14th was a historic night in the annals of professional wrestling history, as New Japan Pro Wrestling made its debut in New York City.
The promotion, for many years the number one promotion in Japan, brought an all star lineup to Basketball City in Midtown Manhattan, highlighted by IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION HIROSHI TANAHASHI DEFENDING THE TITLE AGAINST CHARLIE HAAS, and a spectacular SIX MAN TAG TEAM MATCH FEATURING JUSHIN LIGER, TIGER MASK AND DAN MAFF DEFEATING SHINSUKE NAKAMURA AND THE HERALDED TAG TEAM OF JADO AND GEDO!
The event also featured the semi-finals in the tournament to crown the very first-ever IWGP Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion. Following his victory over Kazuchika Okada, MVP was set to go against Tetsuya Naito, who had defeated Josh Daniels in Rahway, New Jersey the night before.
After a hotly contested battle, MVP scored the victory 10:57 into the match. With this win, MVP advanced to the finals, which would take place the very next night at the legendary converted bingo hall in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania formerly called The ECW Arena.
