The World's Most Famous Fallen-From-Grace Golf Superstar Is Still Topping The Forbes List as The World's Most Powerful Athlete, But His Stroke Ain't What It Used To Be. We Here at The Heyman Hustle Think We Have A Rosie Answer For The Tiger In Need of a Roar!
Tiger Woods has been named The World's Most Powerful Athlete by Forbes Magazine, which only measures a star's earning potential and not how far he or she has fallen from grace. And fallen from grace is exactly what Tiger has done starting with his 2009 Thanksgiving car crash, which led to 20 straight days on the cover of the New York Post as a string of women came forward with tales of the Tiger's indiscretions. Sponsors like Accenture, AT&T and PepsiCo cut ties with the world's most famous golfer. And on the golf course, his swing lost its sting. Tiger has just one PGA Tour win and no Majors since that fateful 2009 night after racking up 71 wins, including 14 Majors during his first 13 years as a pro.
Despite the setbacks, Tiger, whose annual income from 78 million dollars to "only" 58 million dollars due to canceled sponsors like Tag Heuer and Gillette, but he remains one of the highest paid athletes in the world thanks to his lucrative Nike deal. Only boxers Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather earn more on a yearly basis.
No athlete continues to be the attraction Tiger Woods can boast to be. When Tiger shot a final round 62 at the Honda Classic earlier this month, ratings surged 78% versus the prior year. Tiger also broke his 30-month winless streak on the PGA Tour when he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. Ratings for the final round jumped 129%. Woods has maintained this level of impact for 15 years since he won his first Masters in 1997.
Part of Forbes Magazine's Celebrity 100 formula includes a fame quotient that looks at a celebrity’s coverage in print, online and on TV/radio, as well as their social media presence. No other athlete is mentioned on TV and radio more than Tiger and he ranks sixth highest among all celebrities. He ranks fourth overall in print mentions.
Tiger remains a lightning rod for controversy, much like Forbes' second highest-ranked athlete, LeBron James. Tiger's former swing coach, Hank Haney, ripped him in a tell-all book, The Big Miss, released this spring with stories of Tiger being cheap, rude and obsessed with the Navy Seals. Journalists, golf commentators and fellow players have all taken their shots at Tiger over the past two years.
